Architectural Terms
A few technical terms of ecclesiastical architectural are used in the photo descriptions on these pages:
bench end - the vertical ends of church benches or pews
capital - the (often decorated) top of a column
corbel - a small stone bracket or support on a wall
misericord - a small wooden ledge (for leaning on) under a folding seat in a church
reredos - a screen or decoration behind a church altar
sedilia - a stone seat (often recessed into a wall) to the side of a church altar
tracery - stonework (often quite intricate) supporting the glass of a Gothic window
tympanum - the decorated wall space above an entrance (often within an arch)
vaulting - the arched structures in a ceiling or roof space
